Despite the name, epsom salt, it contains no salt. Discovered in 1618 on a farm in Epsom, England, epsom salt is a naturally occurring mineral compound containing hydrated magnesium sulphate (MgSO. 7H2O). The farmer who discovered epsom salt noticed that when dissolved in water, the compound helped heal scratches and skin abrasions. Epsom salt is still used today to treat minor skin abrasions and heal cracks, sores and fissures primarily of the feet.

Health Benefits Of Epsom Salt

Corrects Magnesium Deficiency – The health benefits of Epsom salt are attributed to its magnesium content, a mineral that many of us do not get enough of. Magnesium deficiency is a growing problem and those who are deficient are likely to suffer from muscle cramps, fatigue, osteoporosis, migraines, heart irregularities and arthritis. Fortunately, the magnesium in Epsom salt can be absorbed through the skin, quickly increasing magnesium levels in the body. Soaking in an epsom salt bath for 10-15 minutes with 1-2 cups of the salts will increase your magnesium levels.

Relaxes Muscles – Magnesium relaxes muscles and relieves pain. Epsom salt has anti inflammatory properties which can help alleviate body pain, making it beneficial in treating sore muscles and migraine headaches. Soaking in an epsom salt bath helps relax the muscles of the shoulders, neck, back and skull, helping to relieve a headache or migraine.

Detoxification – Your skin is porous, which allows the magnesium of epsom salts to enter your body, but the porous membrane also allows toxins (chemicals and metals) to be drawn out of your body. Epsom salt increases the osmotic pressure in your skin and allows toxins to be drawn to the surface of your skin and washed away.

Improves Your Mood – Epsom salt helps stabilize your mood and improve or relieve stress, anxiety and depression. There is growing evidence that the magnesium gained from epsom salt soaks increases your serotonin (happiness or relaxation hormone) production in your brain.

Improves Circulation – Epsom salt and magnesium lower blood pressure and improve the circulation of your blood while also protecting the elasticity (flexibility) of your arteries and reducing the occurrence of blood clots. Together, epsom salt and magnesium also regulate the electrolytes (sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium) that are critical in the proper functioning of your cardiac (heart) muscles and thereby decreasing your risk of sudden heart attacks.

Improves Foot Health – Many of the benefits of an epsom salt bath can be duplicated simply by soaking your feet in an epsom salt foot bath. Additionally, epsom salt relieves the symptoms of athlete’s and helps remove foot odor and other foot problems including toenail fungus.
