Like millions of people around the world you are trapped in your home for your safety and the safety of your family. You can choose to spend this time binging on junk food and reruns, or you could use this time productively to strengthen your mind and body.

Here are four steps you can take to strengthen your immune system and beat coronavirus:

Start with a clean, healthy diet. Binging on salty chips and sweet sugar cookies will eventually leave you sad and disgusted with yourself and your body. These poor food choices also weaken your immune system and leave you more susceptible. To boost your immune system and keep it strong, it is critical to follow a healthy diet plan. Meals should be built around natural, whole foods that are nutritious and beneficial to your health. Consume more fruits and vegetables to increase your intake of antioxidants and natural vitamin C. Avoid those tempting processed foods high in sugar, salt and fats which increase inflammation and weaken your immune system.

Then supplement with immune boosting herbs. A clean, natural diet is a great start, but adding natural herbs like elderberry, echinacea, and astragalus can boost your immune system and if you should get sick, even reduce the duration and severity of many illnesses. Elderberry particularly can boost your immune system by preventing harmful viruses from entering and infecting your body’s cells thanks to high levels of anthocyanins (anthocyanidin-3-glycosides). Elderberry anthocyanins produce cytokines, chemical messengers that give your immune system a boost once an invading virus or bacteria is detected. Add (or supplement) more Vitamin B6, C and E known for their immune-boosting properties. Herbal teas including Echinacea, Andrographis and Astragalus help reduce the symptoms of any illness.

Now lose some excess body weight. Rather than spending your “stay at home” time binge eating, make a commitment to lose some of those extra pounds and inches around your waist. The “secret” is simply eat less (or healthier) and exercise more. There are hundreds of free exercise videos and apps available during this extended “quarantine” period, choose the ones that appeal to you and will get you off the couch.

Get more (but not too much) sleep. Your body uses the downtime of sleep to repair and recover. The bulk of your body’s infection fighting also happens during sleep including the release of cytokines (from elderberries) which help regulate your immune response. Eight hours of restful sleep will boost your immune system and prepare your body to keep fighting infection tomorrow. However, sleeping to avoid boredom or as a response to isolation or depression may be beneficial. Find mental and physical challenges or projects to get you out of bed each day.

Following these four immune system boosting tips will reduce your vulnerability to illness and increase your odds of staying healthy. Each is easy to follow and should be implemented daily to ensure your health and beat coronavirus at home!
