Hidradenitis Suppurativa Overview

Hidradenitis Suppurativa- Foods-to -avoid.Hidradenitis Suppurativa also known as acne inversa, is a relatively rare skin disease marked by painful lumps under the skin. These lumps often develop in the armpits, the groin, buttocks and under the breasts. Signs and symptoms include:

  • Painful lumps and lesions.
  • Tunnels under the skin connecting the lumps.
  • Multiple blackheads.
  • Band-like scars.

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a long-term chronic condition.

Symptoms spontaneously appear and then disappear over time and may do so over decades. The condition is more common in women and those with a history of acne and occurs after puberty but usually before age 30.

The cause is unknown, but there are many common factors of those who develop the condition including:

  • Sex & Hormones – The condition appears mostly in women before menstrual cycles and clears up during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
  • Smoking may be a trigger – Many who develop the condition smoke or have smoked in the past. Smoking also worsens the condition.
  • Obesity – Obesity increases skin folds and the friction between these folds where HS is likely to occur.
  • Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes – Diabetics and those with metabolic disorder are more likely to develop HS.
  • Genetics – There is an increased chance of developing HS if a close relative also has the condition.

There is no specific diet designed for hidradenitis suppurativa.  There are, however, several foods that affect the condition including:

  • Dairy Products – Milk, cheese and dairy products raise insulin levels leading to the overproduction of hormones called androgens, which play an active role in hidradenitis suppurativa. Removing dairy from your diet may reduce the symptoms.
  • Sugar – Limiting foods containing sugars and syrups like sodas and cereal may reduce your insulin levels and lessen the symptoms of hidradenitis suppurativa.
  • Brewer’s Yeast – Brewer’s yeast is an ingredient that helps baked goods, such as bread and pizza dough to rise. Avoiding products with brewer’s yeast may promote healing.

Stages of Hidradenitis Suppurativa

The severity of the patient’s case is categorized into stages. Hidradenitis suppurativa symptoms are used to determine the stage of the case, and the proper medical treatment.

Stage 1. Only one or a few areas affected by the lumps, and spread across different areas.

Stage 2. Recurrent abscesses which can either be one or multiple, over different areas of the body. The affected areas are widespread, and there are visible sinus tracts or tunnels.

Stage 3. Multiple and interconnected sinus tracts are already visible and are spread across different parts of the body.
