When dieting, skipping meals is not a good idea. When you skip meals, you are signalling your body that there is not enough food available and you cannot afford to use any stored fat. Your body goes into “starvation” mode and begins to release hormones that fight to conserve fat, eliminating any chance you have of shedding body fat. No time for lunch? Luckily you brought your tasty and nutritious meal replacement shake to prevent that trip to the vending machine for a candy bar and cola.

There is also a healthy homemade meal replacement solution – smoothies and shakes. Both are easy to prepare, nutritious and delicious. All you need is a blender, some fruit, a little protein powder, water or milk, an ice cube or two and you have a meal in minutes. Shakes (minus the ice cream) made with ice and protein powder are also a great option.

Meal replacements work because they are low carb and packed with protein. Protein does an excellent job at keeping you full when compared to fast digesting carbohydrates. Athletes and bodybuilders use protein powder formulas in order to help build lean muscle mass. You can do the same, but with lower levels of protein and less often. Do not go overboard with protein powders as any extra calories not burned by your metabolism will be converted and stored as body fat.

Meal replacement shakes, whether you buy them ready made at the supermarket or make them in your blender, are successful and effective because they pack a lot of nutrition into one calorie controlled drink. Meal replacement shakes offer flexibility and can be made to go and may be the solution you are looking for for healthy weight loss and increasing lean muscle!
