Eucalyptus is a tree native to Australia with aromatic leaves. When these leaves are dried, crushed, and distilled they release the essential oil – eucalyptus. Australian Aborigines have used eucalyptus for centuries as a natural remedy for a range of conditions including treatment for respiratory problems and muscle pain relief. More recently, uses for eucalyptus essential oils extend beyond health and healing to beauty treatments and as an aromatherapy aid for maintaining relaxation and general well being.

Therapeutic benefits of eucalyptus essential oils include:

Treatment of Respiratory Problems – Eucalyptus oil is effective when dealing with respiratory problems like congestion, asthma, and bronchitis. Eucalyptus oil contains strong anti-inflammatory and decongestant properties. For best results, apply a couple of drops on a cloth or handkerchief and inhale regularly, use a diffuser near your bed, or add a few drops to your evening bath before bedtime.

Relief of Fever and Flu – Eucalyptus oil is widely used as a remedy to relieve fevers caused by infectious diseases like colds and flu. Eucalyptus essential oil also helps improve lung function and reduce (and expel) phlegm and helps relieve general symptoms associated with the flu, common cold, and sinus infections. For best results, apply a couple of drops on a cloth or handkerchief and inhale regularly, use a diffuser near your bed or apply a cold compress to the back of the neck, forehead, or chest. Use a minimal amount (2-3 drops) of oil on your compress.

Muscle Pain Relief – Eucalyptus oil is a popular form of massage treatment for relieving muscle pain and stress. Eucalyptus essential oil will help soothe and alleviate stiffness, tense muscles, and conditions such as nerve pain and sprained ligaments. First, dilute the eucalyptus oil with a safe “carrier” oil and then massage the mixture directly onto the problem area for almost instant relief. Applying too much eucalyptus oil directly to your skin can cause irritation.

Hair and Scalp Treatment – Eucalyptus essential oil can be massaged directly into your scalp to stimulate blood flow which can help prevent hair loss and promote new hair growth. Not the most common oil for hair treatment, but still beneficial.

Antibacterial Mouthwash – Eucalyptus oil contains strong germicidal properties which can help fight off and kill bacteria. Using the eucalyptus oil on a daily basis will prevent bacteria build up helping you prevent the formation of cavities while also keeping your mouth clean and odorless. Eucalyptus oil also provides relief for a sore throat by reducing irritation and discomfort.

Treatment of Wounds and Bites – Eucalyptus essential oil contains powerful antiseptic properties and is very effective for treating wounds, insect bites, stings, burns, and rashes. Eucalyptus essential oil is also proven to be very effective for use as an insect repellent.

Aromatherapy – Eucalyptus essential oil promotes a calming effect and helps to relax your mind, body, and soul. Eucalyptus also contains rejuvenating qualities which help to relieve mental fatigue, tiredness, and lethargy. For best results apply one drop of eucalyptus oil to your pulse points or use your diffuser.
