Protein Supplements – Which One Is Right for You?

If one of your dietary goals is to support building and maintaining new muscle, your body needs a constant supply of easily digestible protein for muscle fiber repair and growth. Protein supplements are a simple and convenient option for increasing available protein throughout the day.

But, Which Protein Powders?

There are several sources of protein powders, the three most popular and readily available are Whey, Casein and Soy.

  • Whey protein is a byproduct of cheese production, and one of two proteins contained in milk. Whey is easily digested and absorbed by your body and is best used shortly before and immediately after your workout for rapid delivery of protein to your muscle tissues.
  • Casein is the other milk-based protein, it is much slower to digest and can provide a longer sustained (up to 8 hours) source of protein to your muscles. Casein is ideal for a late night protein shake just before bedtime as it will supply a small amount of protein over the course of the night.
  • Soy protein is a plant-based protein that lacks several essential amino acids. Soy is cheap and readily available but may also be a genetically modified grain high in pesticide residue and most importantly for men, soy mimics estrogen and can promote female characteristics.

Are All Protein Supplements The Same?

The quality of your protein depends on its source. In the case of milk proteins, the quality is based on the milk used and the cows that provide that milk. Choose proteins from hormone free cows to ensure hormone free milk and proteins – both whey and casein.

Choose a protein that contains a blend of proteins, contains only natural ingredients and only a moderate amount of carbohydrates. Many commercial proteins are promoted as “weight gainers” and contain considerably more sugars than protein, you’ll gain weight, but around your waist. Choose a low carb option.

Consider BioTrust Low Carb a blend of four fast-acting and slow-acting proteins to ensure time-released effect. BioTrust Low Carb is Soy and hormone free, contains no artificial colors, sweeteners or flavors and only 4 grams of net carbohydrates per serving.

BioTrust Low Carb also contains ProHydrolase a blend of specialized enzymes developed to enhance the ability of the body to break down, absorb, and utilize whey protein.
